Behind the Scenes: Thomas Zwimpfer – 37 years of passion for IT and customer success

Thomas Zwimpfer has been shaping the history of DATA UNIT AG since 1989. From operator at the beginning of the computer age to head of the Customer Success Team – his journey shows how curiosity, experience and team spirit can shape a company.

From magnetic disks to cloud solutions

When Thomas joined DATA UNIT, hardware still consisted of “large buckets” filled with storage disks. Computer science wasn’t a formal apprenticeship, but rather pioneering work. At DATA UNIT’s data center, he was able to learn programming directly on the job – and was enthusiastic about their in-house ERP solution, which allowed for the rapid implementation of customer customizations.

“The DATA UNIT was small but very sophisticated in its early days,” Thomas recalls. “You could achieve a lot, with a direct impact on both the product and the customer. Today, we primarily work with standard processes. The advantage: much more comprehensive and complex processes can be mapped in less time.”

Change, growth and milestones

For over 37 years, Thomas witnessed DATA UNIT’s transformation from a data center to a systems provider for hardware and software, and finally to a specialized SAP Competence Center. From a small group of developers to an established SAP partner with a clear focus on ERP cloud software – always with foresight and the courage to embrace change.

“The merger with Itegrity in 2022 gave us further momentum – both professionally and personally,” he says. “The combined expertise drives us every day.”

Experience meets passion

Thomas is particularly proud of a project with a cigar factory that he oversaw for many years. He digitized its logistics processes step by step – from manual labor to full automation. “That was real teamwork and a huge learning step for me – both technically and personally.”

Today he is fascinated by how cloud computing and new tools are constantly simplifying processes.

Advice for young IT talent

“Stay curious and specialize,” advises Thomas. “IT is developing rapidly – ​​but those who stay on top of things can shape the future.” Balance is also important, however. “You need energy, but also periods of rest. Work-life balance is not just a buzzword – it keeps you motivated in the long run.”
