Tanninreich GmbH, based in Baden (AG), is much more than a wine merchant. Wine expert Markus Utiger advises restaurants, wineries, and wine retailers and produces his own premium wine. SAP Business One Cloud frees up more time for him to focus on his core business.

In May 2022, Utiger learned that his accounting software would be discontinued within a month. He had to act quickly. “I took this as an opportunity to consider a modern ERP system with integrated processes.”

Challenge

Markus Utiger primarily wanted to simplify his existing processes: Until then, he had recorded virtually all important data using Excel spreadsheets and Word documents – especially the hundreds of notes he took on his wine tours for his clients. “Keeping track of everything was difficult and extremely time-consuming.” For him, it was clear: He needed an IT solution that could map all the services offered by Tanninreich GmbH.

The new software therefore had to support accounting and controlling, manage all master data for articles, provide analyses and reports, and offer interfaces to logistics companies for shipping packages. Furthermore, the system had to be able to generate the mandatory reports for the Swiss wine trade control authorities at the touch of a button, which require detailed information on wine sales.

Solution

Time was of the essence. Markus Utiger evaluated various ERP solutions, including those from SAP. He wasn’t looking for a “Rolls-Royce solution,” but he was aware of the complexity of his services, which needed to be mapped in a single system as a cloud solution. “That didn’t leave many providers,” says Utiger. He ultimately decided on SAP Business One Cloud. “I received excellent advice from DATA UNIT AG,” he explains.

The software is tailored to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It is less complex than large SAP systems, yet includes all the modules necessary to map a company’s core processes. All business areas are interconnected, ensuring seamless business processes. Furthermore, this Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution requires no on-site IT infrastructure. The system is hosted externally in the cloud, continuously maintained, and automatically updated.

Result

Markus Utiger derives the greatest benefit from the SAP Business One Cloud database, where all product descriptions and tasting notes are stored. “The time savings and efficiency compared to before are enormous,” explains Utiger. For example, he is now much faster than before when describing new wines thanks to pre-configured templates and documents in the ERP system. Each wine has up to 40 attributes, ten of which are identical. “The fact that these ten characteristics are already stored in the system makes my work incredibly easier,” Utiger emphasizes. The wine expert visits between 60 and 100 wineries per year, resulting in a large volume of data.
